Beyond Boundaries Canoe, Kayak & Bicycle Shop is in wonderful Wonewoc, Wisconsin, approximately 15 miles from Mauston. Located on the edge of the Driftless Area, they host adventures on the Baraboo River and the 400 State Bicycle Trail. The Baraboo River is the longest reclaimed river in the US, and Beyond Boundaries has been providing canoe and kayak rentals since 2008. Baraboo River headwaters are quietly tucked away just a few miles north of Union Center, Wisconsin. From there, their staff will set you out on a peaceful 6-mile family-oriented canoe or kayak trip through the picturesque landscapes. As you paddle through wetlands, woodlands, and pastures of prairie grass you might pause to enjoy the variety of wildlife such as songbirds, deer, sand hill cranes, owls, eagles, or beaver and river otters. Huge sandstone outcroppings that tower above the waterline serve for great outdoor photo ops and landmarks for an adventurous trip. End just a few blocks back from Beyond Boundaries, and stop back in the old feed mill for a beverage or continue on to enjoy dinner in the area. For the more adventurous, a 14 mile or shorter trip with additional stunning rock bluffs is available from Wonewoc to Lavalle.
Lake Redstone and Dutch Hollow Lake are a few miles from Beyond Boundaries. Day rentals at the lake provide a great option for family paddling. Rates for day rentals include delivery, allowing you to relax, enjoy the beach, and play out on the water at your leisure. The full service bike repair shop at Beyond Boundaries is a great place to bring in your flat tire for a new tube and look-over. Enjoy jumping in on the midpoint of the 400 Bicycle Trail right off of Beyond Boundaries’ back deck. The 101 miles of trails was once home to the Chicago Northwestern Railway and makes for a low grade and relaxing ride. They rent the comfortable hybrid trail bikes that they also sell. Rent a trail-a-bike or kid cart for the young ones. A 14-mile ride leads to Reedsburg, the headquarters of the 400 trail. The other direction offers up to 87 additional miles to the Minnesota border. Beyond Boundaries has great access to the 101 miles of connected trails. They offer shuttle services set up in advance along the trails if you wish to ride only one way. Trail passes are required on the trails for every bicyclist 16 years and older and are available at their shop.
Stop in Beyond Boundaries’ Old Talg’s Feed Mill building for some great conversation or to check out the old wooden grain chutes, century old timbers, and historic images of scenes from within their brick walls. If you fancy unique historic buildings, you can even bring your family or friends to stay overnight in the cozy lodging room.
