Vicki Wards and Allen Sharp are the proud new hosts of Victorian Manor Bed and Breakfast in Mauston. Originally from Osawatomie, Kansas, Vicki and Allen have known each other since they were four years old and were high school sweethearts. Having gone their separate ways after high school, they re-connected in 2010.
They fell in love with the Driftless Area of Wisconsin many years ago. As they neared retirement age, having a bed and breakfast in their home was a dream that has turned into reality. They shopped for the perfect property for several years in the area but couldn’t find just the right home. It’s more difficult than you might imagine as the perfect house had to have at least 5 bedrooms, the ability to have 3-4 bathrooms, and space for their many hobbies, including a large sewing room for quilting. In addition, most municipalities require that a bed and breakfast have off-street parking for every guest room.
Renovations began in June 2017 and like any project of this type and size, took much longer than expected. The first order of business was to repair the front porch roof. In 2016, a large tree fell on the house and hadn’t been repaired. Inside, radiators had frozen and leaked onto hardwood floors. Every room needed walls, floors and ceilings refreshed or repaired. The attic was the original raw space, and is now their master suite and quilting studio.
They had wonderful experiences with their contractors, including Denton Builders, Lange Plumbing, Fox Electric, Swan Services, BTU Management and Blackhawk Contractors. Thankfully they didn’t run into any major problems or issues with the structure. While every effort has been made to retain the character and charm of this gorgeous home, every effort has also been made to make their guests feel welcome with modern comforts as well.
