Who is Aldo?

Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) is one of America’s iconic conservationists and writers. He is best known for writing A Sand County Almanac, which detailed his observations of nature in South Central Wisconsin at a worn-out farm along the Wisconsin River. That piece of land and its chicken coop (affectionately known as “the Shack”) became headquarters for his ecological restoration project that included planting thousands of pine trees, restoring prairie vegetation and documenting the ensuing changes. More about Aldo Leopold can be found at aldoleopold.org.

Why Aldo?

Aldo Leopold’s writings and life reflected his conviction that man needs to live in harmonious balance with his natural surroundings. His philosophy and example are more relevant today than ever.

Through the Where’s Aldo campaign, we invite visitors to enjoy Greater Mauston while raising awareness of Aldo Leopold’s approach to conservation, land ethic and the responsible enjoyment of our lakes, rivers, woods, trails, wildlife and natural beauty.

Why GREATER MAUSTON?

Greater Mauston’s identity is centered on being naturally connected to the outdoors.

Located just upriver from Aldo Leopold’s Shack and Farm, Greater Mauston is in the heart of Wisconsin’s beautiful “Sand Counties.” This region offers some of Wisconsin’s best lakes, rivers, woods, trails, and wildlife viewing. All the reasons Leopold spent as much time as he could in the “Sand Counties.”

Greater Mauston has the same nature-based attributes as its downriver neighbor and offers distinctive opportunities to experience some of Wisconsin’s best lakes, rivers, woods, trails and wildlife viewing.

Greater Mauston and its partners seek to encourage the sustainable enjoyment of Wisconsin’s great outdoors in a way that honors the Aldo Leopold legacy.
